Hiking track

A hiking track passes right by the museum. The track was made in 1981. The track runs from Torsviken to Pörkenäs and Fäboda, then back again to Torsviken. There is also a nature hike next to the 33 kilometer long hinking track. There are maps placed at the entrances and at path crossings. A map can also be bought from the tourism office in Pietarsaari. Red ribbons mark out where the track runs. You don’t have to walk the whole route; you can easily divide it to shorter walks to get acquainted with the nature in the area. The entrance to the track is just 100 m from the mail building of Nanoq.

Dress according to the weather! Good shoes or boots is recommended. Save the nature by staying on the trail. There are houses along the trail that you are welcome to use if you want to take a break. There are wood and fireplaces. You are free to use these unless there are warnings for forest fires. Be careful with the fire! There is more information about the trail on the city of Pietarsaaris webpages www.pietarsaari.fi

If you want a guide with you on a hike, contact the museum and we will arrange one for you.

The Church

The church Avannaata Ulloriaa (North Star) was built 2009. The church was inaugurated in May 2010. It is built as a copy of one of the northerly most churches in Greenland. The original church was built in 1909 when Christianity was brought to the northern parts of Greenland.

The church is fully equipped with heating, altarpiece, harmonium, church benches, christening font and equipment for the Holy Communion. The church seats up to 60 people. Nanoq is cooperating with the congregation of Pietarsaari but there is no priest on the ground so if you want to arrange an event in the church you need to contact a priest on your own.

The church can be rented for private events

Weddings (200 €)

During opening hours of the museum

Includes the opportunity to rehearse in the church

The church is reserved for your private event but the rest of the museum is open to the public and people might be walking on the grounds.

You have the possibility to take wedding pictures at the museum area.

A guided tour at the museum is not included but can be ordered for an extra fee.

If you want to have the wedding party at Nanoq it is possible in Goichman’s Gallery. The Gallery seats about 40 people. The rent for the Gallery is 300 € (after 10 pm an extra charge of 50 €/hour).

Baptizes or divine service (150 €)

During opening hours

Outside opening hours there is an additional cost of 30 €/ hour.

Schools

Teachers! Contact the museum in advance so we can adjust the program so it will fit your teaching. At the museum, objects and information that can be used for lessons in history-, geography, religion, biology and science are presented. Usually a guided tour takes between 45-60 minutes.

To make sure everybody is enjoying their visit we ask you to consider following things.

At the museum

During the visit the teacher is responsible for the students, follow the group at the museum and remind the students that the same rules that exist in your school also exist at the museum. Food and drinks may not be eaten on other places than those intended for eating. Do not disturb guided tours and visitors by running, yelling or speaking loudly. You are welcome to enjoy your food packs at the tables outside the museum. We are grateful that garbage is thrown in the bin and that you leave a neat area for the next group that wants to sit down.

At arrival

Leave the bus at the parkin lot next to the road Pörkenäsvägen. From there you have a few minutes walk to the museum through the nice surrounding woods. The teacher announces your arrival at the reception in the main buildning. The group can wait outside, since the guided tour will start outside the main building.

Exhibitions

The exhibition is divided into several different houses on the ground. Many of the houses are small, but the group will be divided so that everybody gets to have a look on inside of the houses. The main building has two floors.

Contact us

Give us a call if there is anything you are wondering about before the visit. At the museum you are welcome to ask us questions about the exhibitions, to get help or to inform us about something.

Store

At the reception there is a small gift shop. The shop offers a range of books and other souvenirs with an Arctic connection.
