Christianity on Greenland and in the Arctic

During 2009 the Nanoq museum built a copy of one of the world's northernmost churches, the missionary station 'Nordstjernen', that was built in the village of Uummannaq on Northwestern Greenland in 1909. Nanoq chose the name 'Avannaata Ulloriaa' (= North Star) for our own church, which was built by voluntery workers using sponsorship money.

The Nanoq-church was inaugurated on friday the 21st of May 2010 by bishop Björn Vikström. Participating were also guests from both Greenland and Denmark; reverand Henrik Wilhjelm (reverand on both Greenland and in Denmark), the famous singer Rasmus Lyberth and the artist/writer Kristian Olsen aaju.

Art exhibition: Christianity on Greenland

The first priest who came to Uummannaq in 1909 was Gustav Olsen, and his grandson Kristian Olsen aaju now holds an art exhibition on Nanoq. In his paintings he expresses biblical motives like he imagined them in his childhood. The exhibition is open between 21.5-30.9.2010.

Church

The Nanoq museum has during 2009 with voluntery workers built a church on the area. Our church is a copy of one of the worlds northernmost churches, that was originally built in the village of Uummannaq on Nortwestern Greenland in 1909. It was only then that christianity, in the shape of reverend Gustav Olsen, reached the Thule-eskimoes.

The first contacts between christianity and Greenland was in 1721 when the danish priest Hans Egede arrived. Later contacts were also taken by the Moravian Church in the 1730s. The original church in Uummannaq stod only for a few decades, after which the hard weather and winds took its toll.

The Nanoq Church was inaugurated on May 21st 2010. At the same time the museum also opened its summerexhibition; 'Christianity on Greenland and in the Arctic'.  In the church it is possible to hold weddings, christenings and other ceremonies. We chose the name 'Avannaata Ulloriaa' for our church, which means 'North Star' in greenlandic. This is also a homage to the first church/missionary station that Gustav Olsen together with the Inuits built in 1909. Their church was given the name 'Nordstjernen', which in danish also means 'North Star'.
