Practical information
  • To get to the museum, you need to walk 300 m on a forest path that starts from the parking lot next to Pörkenäsvägen. There is a parking lot for the disabled and staff up by the main building.

  • If you have booked a space or a larger experience package, you are allowed to use the staff parking lot. Please note, however, that the staff parking lot can accommodate a maximum of 6 cars.

  • Four-legged friends are allowed in the museum yard but not inside the buildings.

  • The museum reception is in building number 1.

  • If you would like a guided tour, it is a good idea to call or send an email in advance, but you can always ask on site if a guided tour is possible.

  • The museum has two unisex toilets. One of the toilets is equipped with a potty.

Accessibility

  • If needed, museum staff can drive down to the parking area and provide transport for visitors up to the museum. Please contact the staff in advance if you wish to use this service.

  • Nanoq is located in the middle of a forest, and the terrain is natural. There may be slippery stones, exposed roots, and wet ground in certain areas. Please take care when moving around the museum area.

  • Due to the museum’s natural setting, some areas may be difficult or impossible to access by wheelchair. However, the main path is generally accessible for wheelchair users. Because of the terrain, we recommend being accompanied by an assistant.

  • The following buildings/areas are accessible by wheelchair with an accompanying assistant: the lower floor of the main building, the Goichman Gallery, the cafeteria, the laavu (shelter), and the church (please inform the staff so that a wheelchair ramp can be placed at the church).

  • The toilets are not classified as fully accessible toilets; however, they provide sufficient turning space for wheelchair users.

Our collections

Organiserade filer

The Nanoq Museum's collections include objects related to the Arctic and its indigenous peoples, such as the Inuit, Sami and Nenets. In addition, the museum also has a large collection of equipment from both Finnish and foreign expedition and research groups.

The museum also has local historical village objects in its collections.

We are working on creating a digital archive of our museum objects. The archive is continuously updated.

A truly unique and fascinating museum experience that offers a clear and concrete insight into the traditional way of life of people in the Arctic region under harsh natural conditions.

Tapio

A gem in the middle of the forest, close to the seashore. A place without equal. Well worth a visit – call ahead to make sure it is open. A private and rare open-air museum.

Natalia

A genuinely very interesting place! I have not encountered anything like it elsewhere in Finland. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly, and the site is also an enjoyable place for children.
